So another WGWG wins in the person of Philip
Philips. He’s in fact the fourth “white guy with guitar” to win in the American
Idol finals. The other three were David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze, and
Scotty McCreery.
So I go back to my previous post - Will Jessica Sanchez Win American Idol 2012? Some of the points I’ve noted did came true.
Most experts actually cited the same pointers. And so Philip Philips wins as
many had predicted. But just to list them all pointers again, here they are:
The past three American Idol season winners
were not the better singers including Scotty
McCreery over Lauren Alaina, Lee DeWyze against Crystal Bowersox, and Kris Allen over Adam
Lambert. This year, we bear witness to the same scenario all over again.
In the Philippines,
popularity is also important. Thus, most contests including singing
competitions are also dependent on votes. But here, singers who can belt out
well are still preferred. In the U.S., it’s not the case. Although a lot of popular
international singers can belt out, pop music in America is generally about
performance and charisma.
Male contestants dominated
the past few seasons (see names in previous paragraph). Between Kris Allen and Adam
Lambert, the latter is admittedly gay (no offense meant) and in the case of
David Cook and David Archuleta, the former is more masculine over the latter.
The dominance of male singers in the American Idol competition can be attributed
to the fact that most voters are female, particularly young girls who would
naturally root for the good looking guy.
Americans have obviously
voted for one of their own. Jessica is Filipino-Mexican and her supporters can
be considered a minority only in the U.S. Previous winners are all natural
Americans with the exemption of black American Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, and Jordin Sparks. So despite the
remarkable support Jessica Sanchez received from various communities in the
U.S. including Filipino-American societies, a natural American still emerged as
the winner.
American Idol 2012
recorded the highest number of votes at 132 million. But as always, the
percentage of votes for each contestant was not revealed. We don’t know how
slim or how wide the difference between votes for Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez were. But we do know that Philips
had the advantage even before they set the stage for the final showdown.
Jessica, during one of the post awarding ceremony interviews even admitted that
she also thought Phillip will win.
Phillip Phillips clearly doesn’t sing any
better than the previously eliminated top ten contestants, particularly Joshua
Ledet who would have been a more worthy opponent for Jessica Sanchez’ caliber of
singing. But he was never a part of the bottom three, whereas, Jessica was even
almost eliminated at the top 6 results. If not for the judge’s save, she would
have not even reached final 2.
These pointers alone prove that support for
Phillips was already remarkable ever since the live performances and
eliminations started. When news about his kidney problem spread all over the web
right before the finals showdown, it even intensified sympathy for him. Thus, he
gained more supporters and votes.
All is not lost for Jessica Sanchez though.
She has a long way to go when it comes to music. In fact, I’m certain that her
musical career had just started. Don’t forget that not all American Idol
winners make it big. In fact, numerous runner ups and finalists turned out to
be bigger singers than the actual champion.
And so that culminates American Idol 2012.
With the way things are going, it would quite easy to predict the coming season’s
winners using the same pointers cited above.
Congratulations to Phillip Phillips!
