X Factor Philippines First Live Show Performances and Elimination

X Factor Philippines
X Factor Philippines live show stage from the show's Facebook page
Tonight is the first live show for the X Factor Philippines. The theme of the week is movie theme songs. Mentors then assign songs for their respective contestants. The songs are as follows in the order of performance:

Take Off – “Jail House Rock” by Elvis Presley
Allen Jane Sta. Maria – “Keep Holding On” by Avril Lavigne
Gabriel Maturan – “It Will Rain” by Bruno Mars
Modesto Taran – “Johnny B. Goode” by Chuck Berry
Daddy’s Home – “Till My Heartaches End” by Ella Mae Saison
KZ Tandingan “The Show” by Lenka
Jeric Medina – “Unchained Melody” originally by Elvis Presley
Mark Mabasa – “Kiss from a Rose” by Seal
AKAJAM – “Got to be Real” by Cheryl Lynn
Joan Da – “Sunday Morning” by Maroon 5
Jerrianne Templo – “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Roberta Flack
Kedebon Colim – “First Day High” by Kamikazee

Groups

You’d notice that Lucky Girls is not on the list anymore as they’re now known as AKAJAM. The group name is based on the initials of all six members of this girl singing group. They also hail from different parts of the country: Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, thus, representing the entire Philippines in a certain way. Their performance is also captivating and I’d say it was the best performance of the night. This group may break the usual curse of X Factor shows where groups are the first to be eliminated. As for the other groups, the performance of Daddy’s Home was also great. It was Take Off which didn’t really take off much.

Over 25

Mark Mabasa didn’t bring enough justice to the song assigned to him. But it was still OK along with the other 2 in this category. Joan Da even showed us a different side of her by singing with a guitar. Modesto Taran's song is perfect for the genre he sings to.

Boys

Jeric Medina, despite issues with his voice still sang well. Gabriel Maturan’s version of Bruno Mars’ “It Will Rain” with an upbeat tempo is also refreshing. Kedebom Lim as always is entertaining. But I still think he doesn’t fit the show. He would have been better off if it was Pinoy’s Got Talent. Although admittedly, I recognize that he does have an X Factor for being entertaining, it’s not enough for him to win a “singing” show. Note the quote on the word singing. I still think that the other two boys who were not chosen for the top 12 slot would have been better contenders. See X Factor Philippines Top 20 Finalists Announced.

Girls

It was everyone’s favorite KZ Tandingan who received the most criticism. But she actually looked good and I have to disagree with mentor comments that it’s not the proper song for her. It actually is. The song is in fact perfect for her bubbly personality and her range of voice. The same applies to Jerrianne Templo with her sultry image and voice. Allen Jane Sta. Maria’s fine and her song simply reminded of the Glee Project. It’s the song a contender sings after being eliminated. I can’t help but equate elimination with that very inspiring song. J Kudos to Charice Pempengco for her song choices and her new blonde hair. Mr. Gary V. was right in saying that despite this mentor’s tender age, she has learned a lot from the music industry.

Let’s just wait tomorrow and see who goes home first during the elimination night. For now, can you please cast a vote too on the previous post about X Factor? See X Factor Philippines Top 12 Who Will Perform for the Live Shows Has Been Chosen.

Update:

Bottom 2 contestants were Joan Da who sang “Chasing Pavements by Adele” for her secondary performance and Jerrianne Templo who had her own rendition of “At Last” by Ella Fitzgerald. Naturally, judges Ms. Pilita and Charice voted against the opposite contender, not their own. Both Martin and Gary V. voted for Jerrianne Templo to be sent home. I was actually hoping for a dead lock so the singer with the lowest total vote count gets eliminated. We will never know how who had the lowest vote count because it was sexy and sultry Jerrianne who was sent home. I can sense the devastation in Charice’s face despite her new blonde hair with red highlights look. It was heartwarming that Ms. Templo’s fiancĂ©e was in the audience supporting her complete with raising that card board banner. But I believe it could be her not being single and available anymore which caused the low turnout of votes.

Still, it was a surprise. So is the safe passage for Modesto Taran and Kedebon Lim. With them safely performing again for next week, I will never underestimate the power of the masses from now on. Their X Factor is not due to looks and talent, respectively, but simply because of their mass appeal and charisma.
