American Idol new season offers a new twist to the
process used to choose your next American Idol contestant in its 12th
season – Sudden Death round!
The new season started to
air last January 16, 2013 and as usual, auditions all over the U.S. were held.
But this time around, this major singing competition moved the stage from major
cities to small towns and suburban areas in order to cater to idol hopefuls who
live in far flung areas. Not only that, we are witnesses to the new breed of
judges in the persons of country star Keith Urban, R&B diva Mariah Carey,
and Barbie-doll pop princess Nicki Minaj. Randy Jackson remains a resident
judge with Jimmy Iovine as a mentor and Ryan Seacrest as host.

The format remains pretty
much the same with the auditions leading to Hollywood week. To advance through group
round, all contestants had to sing solo performances simultaneously with four
other singers from the same gender. Then, the dreaded group competition follows
where everyone performs songs they choose from a list. They perform as a group
but is judged individually. This year, females and males are still grouped within
their gender but the show had chosen group assignments this time around.
After the group round,
remaining singers still had to battle through a solo piece performance of their
choice where only 20 for each category (male and female) must remain. But since
there were more than 20 left for each bracket, there were several contestants
who had to sing yet another song in order to prove their worth in the top 20
for their category.
This week, the Sudden Death
Round is a new addition to the already exciting American Idol competition
format. Here, the top 20 boys and top 20 girls will sing live with half of them
going home in a shocking sudden death. There were 10 females and 10 males who
already performed with 5 sent home and 5 saved from each group this week. Next
week, 20 more (10 women and 10 men) will be singing for the judges. Afterwards,
the top 20 overall (10 males and 10 females) will sing live for America’s
votes.
What else will American
Idol surprise us with this season? I’m sure they have more to offer up their
sleeves these coming weeks. We can only watch, wait, and anticipate how American Idol new season will turn out.
