You read that right. I’m talking about
Avengers 2. There’s technically no movie yet and there’s not even a word about
it but watching Avengers made me not only wonder if there’s a soon to be an
Avengers 2 sequel, I actually believe there will be soon enough. Would you like
to bet on it?
So what made me believe that there will be
an Avengers 2 movie? I’m sure it’s the same thought which crossed your mind at
the culmination of the movie. That is, if you stayed long enough to see the
movie credits. Most people won’t but I’m fond of waiting till the curtain
falls. I’m hoping to see an unexpected scene perhaps or the usual possibility
of a sequel left open. In Avengers, the latter happened.
If you’re wondering who the character at the
credits was, it is Thanos, one of Marvel’s villains in its comic book series.
In fact, he first appeared in Iron Man. But what role will he play in Avengers
2? Obviously, he’s going to be the new nemesis for the Avengers team. His
presence on Earth will force the team to regroup again as Nick Fury (Samuel L.
Jackson) foretold. How Thanos will appear and what will circumstances will it
lead into is something we don’t know yet and can’t predict. It will be a
surprise even if we read all the comic book collections, in the same manner
that the other Marvel heroes’ movies are close yet far from the original comic
book plot.
Aside from a new enemy, new characters can be possibly introduced, particularly more Avengers. But who would
be included? If you refer to the original comic book series, Wasp and Ant Man were
left out in the film. As the comic book series progressed, there were numerous
other super heroes which had joined or were recruited by the Avengers team. In
fact, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) were not part
of the original group and were only introduced later. So the question will be
which of such characters will be marketable enough for a movie franchise?
Can Wolverine be worthy? His character in
the X-Men movie series was well followed that a solo movie was even filmed. In
the comic book, he joins the group at a later time. But it doesn’t matter.
Black Widow and Hawkeye got squeezed in too. The Avenger’s movie setting is not
similar to the original comic book anymore anyway. Did you also wonder why
Spiderman was not included? He’s still a Marvel character and movie franchises
about him were blockbuster hits. We can’t say that for the upcoming remake yet
though.
Whoever will be chosen as a new character,
if ever, may have a separate movie first to introduce the character formally. All
heroes in the Avengers movie were earlier introduced with their own film (Hulk,
Thor, Captain America) with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) having two films.
Black Widow and Hawkeye did not have separate movies, however, although Black Widow
was present at Iron Man 2 and Hawkeye made an appearance at Thor (Chris
Hemsworth). Another question will be - will the original stars be the same
cast?
As for non-heroes such as agents, I was
hoping Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) will still play a part. I was even thinking
that his demise was faked as much as the Captain America (Chris Evans) cards
were. He played a major role in bringing the team together as one, even in his
death. Love teams can’t be missed as well. In Avengers, only Iron Man has
Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow). It was a disappointment that Jane (Natalie Portman) for
Thor was not in the movie.
But before we worry about an Avengers 2
movie, there’s already word that all Avengers with their own film will be releasing
sequels. It starts with Iron Man 3 and Thor for 2013 and Captain America for
2014. There were also hints of a possible Hulk sequel as Mark Ruffalo already signed
for six more films with Marvel. All cast in Avengers and their respective solo
films will retain their original cast members.
