Philips Satinelle Essential Compact Epilator Review

Ever heard of an epilator for removing hair on legs and armpits? If not, this post is for you! I'm specifically referring to the Philips Satinelle Essential HP6420 compact epilator model in this post but other general information about epilators is also included.

What is an Epilator?

First, what is an epilator? It's an electrical device that can pull multiple hairs at the same time and remove them from the roots. It's similar to how waxing works when removing skin hair but epilation doesn't affect the cells on the outer layer of the skin.

Why use an Epilator?

Epilators won't cause chicken skin or dark shadows, which are common when shaving via razors or plucking hair using tweezers. Also, the effect can last as long as waxing but isn't as painful. Hair regrowth may extend for weeks. Some even attest that continued usage causes less hair in areas where the epilator is used over time. That didn't happen to me though.

Since this is the only epilator product I was able to try, let me write a quick review about it.

First of all, the product is long-lasting. I've been using the item for several years now (back in 2018) and it still works fine. There is still no rust on its metal/steel parts. While it can also be attributed to the care I apply before and after using the item, I do no doubt the quality and durability of the brand itself.

Second, it works. I have always just used the lower setting but it's able to remove hair with no problems whether the hair is long or short. It's recommended to not wait for the skin hair to grow too long before epilating though. Most agree that the ideal length should be trimmed within 3-5 mm. or about 1/8 inch before using an epilator. Anything longer than that may cause the hair to break, which may lead to ingrown hair.

This specific model is ideally for legs but I use it for armpit hair as well. I didn't get to try it on other hair areas or and I wouldn't dare do so anyway.

Lastly, this compact epilator is cost-effective. Buy one for 2,000+ pesos (depending on the retail store), and you can use it for years. Compare that to other options like visiting waxing salons or purchasing the same products used for waxing or shaving over and over, you'll eventually save more money in the long run.

Pre and Post Epilation Care

Apart from trimming hair to the recommended length before epilating, it's also advised to exfoliate first to get rid of dead cells beforehand. This supposedly makes epilating more comfortable; the same applies to using the epilator after taking a bath so the skin is softer.

Apply a soothing aloe vera gel or tea tree oil for post-epilation care. Don't use lotions and moisturizers right after epilating. Wait for at least 12-24 hours before applying deodorant as well.

Where to Buy an Epilator

For the Philips brand, there are several models to choose from. There's even a cordless one now. You can buy one through the official brand store website, Watson's, as well as resellers in online shopping platforms like Lazada and Shopee. I got mine via Lazada at that time. The purchase comes with a local manufacturer warranty of 2 years.

You may also browse through selections from Amazon which include other trusted brands like Braun, Panasonic, and more.
